Before every shoot

Paperwork

  • Participant release signed by a parent for every kid on camera. The coaches send the forms home; Stephanie collects them on set.
  • Logo & IP release from each partner organization.
  • Location release wherever a property owner can sign one.
  • No signed release, no face. That kid stays in the background, unrecognizable.

Wardrobe

  • What they'd normally wear for the activity.
  • No brand logos, no busy patterns. Solid colors read best.
  • Coaches: org shirts welcome (Golden Elite, the volleyball coach).
  • Players: no school branding.
  • Medals and gear they're proud of: bring them. We may not use them, but we'd like the option.

On the day

  • We shoot around the practice, not over it. Block two hours to be safe; most days need less.
  • A monitor on set shows Stephanie the main camera live.
  • Water and shade for the outdoor days.
  • Nobody is pushed onto camera. If a kid isn't comfortable, we move on.

What to know about each location
Track · UWF

High sun at 3 PM

We bring diffusion for the close shots. Tight framing keeps it from reading as UWF.

Dance · Mt. Zion

A studio that happens to be a church

An older, darker room. We light it and frame it as a practice space, not a service. Moving isn't realistic because of the dancers' rides, so we make this room work.

Volleyball · PHS

On campus, but not about PHS

District and principal have approved it. Nothing that identifies the school stays on screen. The coach can wear her gear; the players can't.

Basketball · outdoor court

No school, no highlight

Florida currently restricts high school basketball activity, so Dequarious plays in plain clothes, off campus. Side profile and action are fine; no face close-ups.

Music · Hope House

Reed plays to a track

We send him a reference track ahead of time and record several takes of him improvising over it. Nobody expects a whole song. The best moments get cut together.

More than we need

We shoot more coverage than the film uses so we have options in the edit. The treatment keeps the edit honest to the idea.

Interview guide

Off camera, seated, five minutes, a parent nearby. A crew member the kid has already met asks, and Stephanie can help. Don't tell them what to say. If they freeze, move on.

Opening (every teen)

  1. Finish this sentence: “My story doesn't end with…”
  2. Alternate, record it too: “There's more to me than…”

Scenes 2–4 (every teen, same three)

  1. When life gets hard, what do you do to cope or feel better?
  2. How has [their activity] positively impacted your life?
  3. What advice would you give another teen who may be struggling?

What they found

  1. Finish this, one word, your choice: “When it gets hard, I…”

If there's time (from the original outline)

  • Who believed in you first?
  • What would people be surprised to know about you?
  • What are you trying to build?

Mentors

  1. What changes in a kid when they find this?
  2. What do you want them to know when they walk out the door?

Scripted lines

The secondary option, from the original outline. If an answer doesn't land, we offer a line to whichever kid is most comfortable, read on camera or recorded as voiceover. Reed is the backstop.
